dx.Marian Bublewicz (born, 25.08.1950 r., Olsztyn – died, 20.02.1993 r., Lądek Zdrój). The best Polish rally driver of the 80s and 90s who made Olsztyn known as the center of motor sports. Many people appreciated and liked him not only in his home city. He died driving with the first numbed, belonging to a champion, in the Winter Dolnośląski Rally where he triumphed 7 times year in year. Due to the charisma and passion of what he did, he has remained a pattern for many young colleagues and fans. In the plebiscite of the monthly newspaper “Auto Moto and Sport” in 2000 they has designated him The Best Polish Rally Driver of the XX century as the evidence of their undying commemoration.
The vice – champion of Europe 1992; six-fold champion of Poland, four times year in year (1983, 1987, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992); jointly, including the triumph classes, Marian Bublewicz won The Polish Rally Championship 20 times. In 1993 his name was included in the priority list “A” – published by The Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA).
In 1991, he was the first in Poland who created the professional team – Marlboro Rally Team Poland, ipso facto joining the group of world wide motorist stars like Ayrton Senna, Carlos Sainz or Juha Kankkunen.
Marian Bublewicz was very assiduous, patient and scrupulous while preparing to each rally. He was training a lot, often in the forests near Olsztyn what distinguished him from his rivals. He also financed his passion himself managing the car service where, in 1993, he employed 50 people. In his free time, Marian Bublewicz was driving a cross motorbike and water skiing. He was a gentle and lowly man with a difficult to forget smile.
His death provoked the entire change in the security standards assured on the rally special stages in Poland. Severely injured, Marian Bublewicz, was pulled out of the crashed car by fans and volunteer firemen using only the simple tools because there was not any rescue car that should have been provided by the organizer. Afterwards, the only tree growing in the ditch in which the car hit was cut and a cross has been made from it. A commemorative stone has been also set in this place and as the local people say some igniting lights are always present there.
In one of the interviews Marian Bublewicz said: “Many admirable rally drivers died, but I consider it as a mischance that can by quite quickly suffered by the loss of life in such discipline. It is a great tragedy when a man dies in the sport competition”.
